Palmenwind

I was waiting to update the site with all the new foals born in 2003 and here I am typing up an obituary...

July 11, 2003 12:25pm

On July 7th as I was free running Palmenwind for some new clients an aweful thing happened... He rolled, as every horse does (and I'm sure greys do more so) and as he laid down to roll the pressure of his small intestines herniated his diaphragm. About 4 meters travelled forward into his chest cavity. After 3 hours of emergency surgery at Guelph University it was evident that the location of the hernia prevented the vets from patching the opening. This meant two things...the chances of the present situation repeating itself were great and even if he made a full recovery and it never happened again, Palmenwind's breathing would be compromised to the point that under saddle work, breeding, even turnout were advised against. What kind of recovery is that? So it was with sadness and tears that John and I decided to have Palmenwind euthanized at 1 am on July 8th, 2003. John and I would like to thank the vets, interns and technicians at the Large Animal Clininc in Guelph that did everything they could to save Palmenwind and in particular, Dr. Don Trout DVM for his compassion and understanding in dealing with such a delicate and devastating situation. Palmenwind leaves behind some incredable youngsters and some mares in foal. His temperment allowed us to do much volunteer work and so he touched many people's lives. All who had the opportunity to meet Palmenwind were able to appreciate his calm and relaxed demeanor and positive disposition. He was able to draw a smile out of the most timid of children and welcomed visitors into his barn with ears forward and a gentle nuzzle. He was the perfect ambassidor of the horse world. A fellow of incredable stature, Palmenwind will be sorely missed at Spruce Lane Stable.

May he rest in peace, Aug 24th, 1986 - July 8th, 2003.

Palmenwind

His temperment is truely indescribable, except to say that he has a keen sense of his rider's capabilities, adjusts his demeanor accordingly and knows the capacity of his tasks inside out.

Palmenwind's first foals, after a six year sabatical, arrived in 1999. All of the youngsters show excellent conformation and substance.
But more importantly they display their sire's same wonderful nature. We are looking forward to their showing debut.

Palmenwind displays his athletic talents strongly in his jumping capabilities, yet all of his older offspring are competing with great success in the dressage ring.
